Journaling your loves and fears is a great tool for self-development. Years ago when I was in the thick of starting my housecleaning business, I came across a podcast called The Mental Illness Happy Hour. As part of the show, he would have his guests ramble through what they love and what they are afraid of. It was inspiring to hear from others similar fears within myself.
And years before that, when I was a fumbling, flailing, depressed-yet-stubbornly-oriented -towards-self-help 21 year old, my father’s friend told me I needed to write my fears. She saw that I held all my negativity inward and knew this would help release me from it’s demons. She was right: journaling about what I was afraid of helped me to let go of the mental hang-ups I carried.
I thought it was such a good insight into who I was and I started adding it to my journal practice. I encourage you to do the same!
Why Journaling Loves and Fears is Powerful
There’s something about writing that carries impact on our lives. Every goal-setting expert will tell you to write down your dreams and goals as the primary step towards achieving dreams. It’s like a declaration to ourselves that whatever is on our mind is worthy of attention and action. It’s both a starting point and a release valve of our emotions and inner world.
When you write down your fears, you are not giving them power in the sense that you’ll act out their nonsense. Instead, you’re releasing their grip on your imagination, freeing you up to live more presently and to enable your wonderful mind to focus on more positive things. It also helps us become aware of unresolved issues we may carry that we then can work on healing.
Alternatively, when we write down what we love, we’re putting ourselves in a beautiful state of mind, a state of gratitude and positive reflection. This reminds us of the blessings in our lives and who we are. It encourages our inner child’s sense of enjoyment of this world of ours.
